Introduction

Why career advancement?

At the heart of the United Nations’ (UN) work lies its most valuable asset – its people, who every day decide to dedicate their time and energy to advancing peace, development and human rights across the globe. However, navigating a career within such a dynamic and multicultural system is rarely a straightforward process and presents unique challenges.

As the UN’s trusted learning partner, UNSSC is committed to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Responding directly to the identified and expressed needs of UN personnel, we support the workforce at all levels in building the competencies, mindsets and strategic capabilities required for career progression within the UN system and other multilateral organizations.

Supporting professional growth across the UN

Our learning solutions are designed to support career advancement at every stage of a UN professional’s journey. From onboarding and induction for junior professional officers (JPOs) to preparing for career transitions and leadership roles, our programmes equip personnel with the tools to navigate their careers with confidence and clarity.

We offer targeted learning on leadership styles, effective communication, networking and interview techniques. Our offerings also strengthen leadership and management capabilities by fostering self-awareness, emotional intelligence and alignment with the UN System Leadership Framework. Through these learning pathways, we empower personnel to grow professionally, contribute meaningfully and adapt to the evolving needs of the UN and multilateral environments.

Purposeful Futures: Navigating the UN Pathway

The Purposeful Futures: Navigating the UN Pathway capacity-building engagement programme – in partnership with the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance – focuses on equipping participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance opportunities to enter and thrive within the UN system at the P3-P4 levels. Recognizing that the target participants are external candidates with limited exposure to the UN system, the programme is designed to sensitize them to its structure and values, while also preparing them for the recruitment process and the expectations of working within the Organization.
