Introduction

Our why

Youth is not just a stage of life. With a global population of 1.8 billion, young people represent an unprecedented opportunity for progress and innovation. Global frameworks – including the United Nations (UN) Youth 2030 Strategy, the New Agenda for Peace, the Pact for the Future, and UN Security Council Resolutions 22502419 and 2535 – recognize youth as critical agents of change in peace, development and human rights. At UNSSC, we strengthen the UN system’s capacity to work with and for youth, not just as learners but as leaders, experts and co-creators.

Promoting youth participation for leadership, peace and sustainable development

We support young people in their journey of developing capacities to contribute to strengthening multilateralism by driving decisions, shaping institutions and co-creating solutions. From primers that guide implementation and increase youth engagement on key agendas to orientation and learning paths for junior personnel, we embed youth voices and perspectives across our learning portfolios, equipping young people with the skills and confidence to lead today.

My Sustainable Lifestyles Challenge

My Sustainable Lifestyles Challenge (MSLC) is an online gamified learning platform, offered in English, French, Spanish and Russian, that channels learning towards behaviour change through actionable commitments. MSLC takes learners on a learning journey in an immersive environment, in which they learn about sustainability, system change, and the impact of their lifestyles across the domains of food, housing, mobility, consumption and leisure by participating in engaging challenges.

Thai SDG Micro-Primer

The Thai SDG Micro-Primer demonstrates how innovative, mobile-first microlearning can mobilize youth as powerful agents of change for sustainable development, reaching over 10,000 learners across Thailand. Available in English and Thai, this initiative shows how UN organizations and UN Country Teams can partner with UNSSC to create tailored youth learning experiences that are localized, engaging, and action-oriented to raise SDG awareness, inspire collective action, and build a new generation of sustainable development leaders in their own countries.

JPO Orientation Programme

This programme is the only UN system-wide inter-agency orientation for the junior professional officers (JPOs) deployed to the UN and other multilateral organizations. The programme focuses on core and cross-cutting issues, providing JPOs with a common package of knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to be effective and undertake a successful JPO assignment in the UN system and particularly be successful in the first 100 days after deployment.

UNSSC partners with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and donor countries to develop the curriculum, incorporating feedback from previous editions.

Training of Trainers on Youth, Peace and Security

Our Training of Trainers (ToT) on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) empowers participants to become effective facilitators and champions of the YPS agenda. The programme combines participatory training methodologies with practical YPS knowledge, helping participants design, deliver, and evaluate impactful learning experiences in their own contexts. Through this hands-on ToT, we build a pool of skilled trainers ready to lead YPS initiatives and share knowledge within their organizations and communities.

We deliver globally, with experience across the Western Balkans and South Caucasus, and tailor each programme to meet the specific needs of our partners.

Skills-building workshops for UNODA’s Youth Leader Fund for a World Without Nuclear Weapons

We design and deliver innovative programmes that empower young leaders to take meaningful action for peace and security.

As part of UNODA’s flagship initiative – the Youth Leader Fund for a World Without Nuclear Weapons – we complemented participants’ theoretical knowledge of disarmament with practical, skills-based learning. Through a series of interactive online workshops for 100 young leaders worldwide, we strengthened their abilities in leadership, negotiation, problem-solving and communication – essential soft skills to translate knowledge into action and lead impactful disarmament initiatives in their communities.

The development process for learning products by UNSSC greatly impressed us. Engaging in design thinking and storyboarding collaboratively was an enriching experience, and we were particularly astounded by how quickly a prototype emerged from our sessions [...]. We're truly grateful for the thoughtful user experience design, which clearly prioritizes the learners' needs.

This training has been a valuable resource for gaining a deeper understanding of how to engage safely and responsibly within the UN system. The course effectively addressed critical issues related to misconduct, reporting mechanisms, and biases, all of which are essential to maintaining a professional and ethical environment. I feel better equipped to navigate challenges in my work and contribute to a safer and more respectful UN community.

The challenge has taught me that a meaningful life is a mindful life. To me, being mindful means being aware of your options, conscious about your choices and critically evaluative of your actions. [...] These challenges have taught me how easy and simple it can be, and the importance of being environmentally mindful.

I came away from this course with a lot to think about. I enjoyed the safe space to ask questions and take advantage of the vast learning resources in the UN system and at the Staff College. I appreciated the significant customization of this course for mid-term JPOs.
