Introduction

Our why

In a time of global backsliding in women’s and girls’ rights and growing backlash against gender equality, the United Nations (UN) reaffirms gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) as both a fundamental right and a transformative force across its three pillars: peace and security, human rights and development. Alongside advancing gender equality worldwide, the UN is also called to lead by example through internal transformation – fostering inclusive workplaces where women are empowered to lead, in alignment with the vision of UN 2.0. As the UN’s trusted learning partner, UNSSC is committed to supporting this transformation through dedicated learning and capacity development pathways.

Advancing gender-responsive UN action and leadership

Through online, in-person and blended learning offerings – including courses, workshops, and training of trainers (ToT) programmes – we advance key UN agendas, such as the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and reinforce the coherent and meaningful integration of GEWE principles across the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). Our programmes equip personnel in all duty stations with the knowledge and skills to effectively mainstream gender equality and women’s empowerment in their work, while cultivating a pool of expert facilitators to champion these efforts.

Aligned with the UN System Leadership Framework, Senior Leadership commitments and UN 2.0, we also design tailor-made leadership journeys for women across the UN. These programmes explore the professional and personal challenges unique to women leaders and enhance their capacity to navigate their careers with greater awareness, agency and authority.

We combine advanced learning methodologies with substantive expertise on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) to strengthen institutional capacities for gender-responsive leadership. Between November 2024 and February 2025, in partnership with UN Women Morocco and the Royal Armed Forces of the Kingdom of Morocco, we delivered two editions of a Trainer of Trainers programme that equipped uniformed personnel and gender advisors from seven African countries to serve as multipliers of change within their institutions.

We co-create inclusive and context-responsive learning solutions that strengthen women’s leadership in peacebuilding. Building on our expertise in learning and participatory design, in collaboration with UN Women Haiti, we developed a modular digital toolkit that supports local trainers in delivering accessible, low-bandwidth training tailored to the Haitian context.

We strengthen the gender competence of mission leadership through targeted, context-specific learning solutions. For the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), we delivered an in-person training for Section and Unit Chiefs, enhancing their ability to integrate gender equality and Women, Peace and Security commitments into planning, budgeting and management processes.

UN Amplify: Women and Leadership

Our flagship programme provides women leaders at the P4-P5 level with the space, expertise and tools to support them in navigating challenges, leadership considerations and professional development that is unique to women. Despite the ongoing financial crunch, and evolving strategic reforms, we were able to run three interagency cohorts with 109 participants from the headquarters and peace keeping missions. The learning – complemented by 360-degree leadership assessments and personalized executive coaching sessions – continued in a blended modality with virtual and self-paced learning offerings, over a duration of 16 weeks.

For 2026, the programme will be offered in a new format, with renewed learning objectives that address the evolving leadership needs in the context of systemic uncertainty.

Being a participant in the first edition of the WPS ToT was a powerful experience. It really opened my eyes — not just to the importance of gender perspectives in peacekeeping, but to how much they matter in our everyday work, no matter the context. What stayed with me most was the supportive and inclusive environment created by the UNSSC facilitators. [...] Returning as a facilitator in the second edition was something truly special — not just a step forward, but a chance to give back, to walk alongside others in their learning journey, and to help create the same kind of space that had made such a difference in my own.

I highly recommend the Women Leadership Programme course to women looking to enhance their leadership skills. This programme provides invaluable tools, particularly important for women in leadership positions. It covers essential skills such as negotiation, being a present and impactful leader, and practical skills that can be applied on a day-to-day basis. The course has been incredibly empowering, the programme also facilitated invaluable connections with women leaders across the UN and various duty stations, and it allowed me to join a distinguished alumni network of 1,200 outstanding UN women leaders, where we continue to learn from and empower each other.
