Introduction

Why sustaining peace?

Preventing conflict and sustaining peace lie at the heart of the mandate of the United Nations (UN). As emphasized in the 2016 Sustaining Peace resolutions, peace is not only the absence of war, but a continuous process requiring prevention, inclusion and resilience across the conflict cycle. Yet, over the past decade, new dynamics of conflict and global challenges such as poverty, climate change and humanitarian crises have made this goal increasingly complex to achieve. This evolving landscape calls for practitioners to continually adapt their approaches to peacebuilding efforts through updated theoretical knowledge, practical tools and analytical skills.

Building capacities for peace and security

We deliver programmes to UN personnel and their partners, including government representatives, non-governmental organizations, civil society and academia, aimed at strengthening their capacity to prevent and address conflict. Our courses enhance expertise in human security and cut across multiple agendas, such as  the Women, Peace and Security (YPS), Youth, Peace and Security (YPS), Climate, Peace and Security (CPS) and the Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) agenda. We also support operational effectiveness by boosting skills in analysing and engaging with armed groups, as well as in peacekeeping-intelligence gathering, analysis and dissemination.

Transforming Expertise into Learning Solutions

Our Peace and Security Hub supports partners in transforming their substantive expertise into engaging and impactful learning experiences. We provide tailored support in facilitation to delivery, evaluation and digital hosting, ensuring that knowledge is effectively transferred and applied in practice.

Recent examples include the Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) Advanced Training, developed with the OSRSG-CAAC, and the Peacekeeping Intelligence (PKI) Training Campus, co-created with PICT and PKIA. Through such collaborations, we bridge the gap between expert knowledge and effective learning, enabling partners to expand reach and impact.

Climate Peace and Security Peacebuilding Programming

In June 2025, our Peace and Security Hub organized the “Climate Peace and Security Peacebuilding Programming” on designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating catalytic climate, peace and security programmes jointly with the Peacebuilding Support Office and the Climate Security Mechanism. Eight UN entities from 15 countries participated, workshopping joint programmes under development for the Peacebuilding Fund. Participants exchanged lessons learnt, drew on expert input and developed action plans to move their initiatives forward.

This tailored learning solution aims to enable personnel to identify and analyse data relevant to the delivery of protection of civilians mandates in UN peacekeeping at the operational and strategic levels. A group of 27 colleagues from the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) already benefited from the training, which was delivered in nine live webinars over six weeks – in collaboration with How to Build Up – and included modules on data exploration, visualization and storytelling.

Through innovative learning and dialogue, we help ensure emerging technologies advance the Women, Peace and Security agenda rather than reinforce inequality or digital harm.

In partnership with the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, we held an in-person workshop on the sidelines of the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris (10-11 February). The event brought together experts and practitioners to navigate the intersection of AI, gender and peacebuilding.

Training Skills on Peace and Security Thematic Areas

As part of our tailored learning solutions, we offer training skills on thematic areas designed to meet the specific needs of each client organization, and the unique contexts in which they operate.

Our training skills programme can focus exclusively on training methodologies or be integrated with thematic areas where capacity development plays a key role – such as Youth, Peace and Security (YPS), Women, Peace and Security (WPS), and Conflict Sensitivity. Participants gain tools for learner-centred design, delivery and evaluation, empowering them to lead training initiatives within their communities and organizations.

We deliver globally, offering facilitation in English, French and Arabic.

- Integrated Data Analytics for Sustaining Peace Boot Camp

Anass Rahim
Gender Focal Point and Member of the Peacekeeping Training Centre Ramp-up Committee, Royal Armed Forces Morocco

Being a participant in the first edition of the WPS ToT was a powerful experience. It really opened my eyes — not just to the importance of gender perspectives in peacekeeping, but to how much they matter in our everyday work, no matter the context. What stayed with me most was the supportive and inclusive environment created by the UNSSC facilitators. [...] Returning as a facilitator in the second edition was something truly special — not just a step forward, but a chance to give back, to walk alongside others in their learning journey, and to help create the same kind of space that had made such a difference in my own.

Joining youth in making the world a more peaceful place has been and continues to be one of the greatest honors of my professional life. I can say without hesitation that this course has tangibly improved my work as a YPS advocate and programmer.

Despite it being extremely difficult to realize the actual details on how children are being recruited and used, I think it’s important that this course makes you live through real stories to keep you from being disassociated with real-life victims. It is also designed in a very user-friendly and easy manner, helping me enjoy the process while retaining a lot of information.

The UNSSC facilitation and peer learning methodology has garnered immense appreciation from all participants. I am particularly impressed by the proactive approach of the team and their unwavering commitment to bolstering our statebuilding and reconciliation endeavors. Notably, the action planning workshop conducted in Baidoa, where we collaborated to assist our colleagues in South-West State, exemplified the efficacy and dedication of the partnership.
