A solid understanding of the context in which we work is essential for all United Nations (UN) actions and interventions. Without a clear grasp of the drivers, actors and dynamics of peace and conflict, even well-intentioned initiatives risk reinforcing existing tensions or missing opportunities to contribute to social cohesion. As highlighted by the Sustaining Peace resolutions and the UN Good Practice Note on Conflict Sensitivity and Peacebuilding, preventing conflict requires a more strategic and coherent approach that recognizes conflict sensitivity as a minimum criterion for all UN personnel and programmes.
To support UN personnel and professionals working across the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus, we offer a series of courses that introduce the core elements and principles of conflict analysis, explore key analytical tools and equip participants to develop programmes and interventions that are both conflict- and context-sensitive, thus minimizing the risk of exacerbating tensions while creating opportunities for peacebuilding.
We develop comprehensive learning initiatives to boost the capacities of country-based practitioners to design, develop and implement conflict-sensitive and responsive peacebuilding programmes. We have supported the joint efforts of the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sudan and their partners in developing the Online Course on Conflict Sensitivity & Peacebuilding and three online modules on Durable Solutions, Community Engagement, and Conflict Sensitivity for Programming in Darfur. The course and modules are available both in English and Arabic.
As part of our tailored learning solutions, we offer Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes on Conflict Sensitivity designed to meet the specific needs of each client organization, and the unique contexts in which they operate. Participants gain tools for learner-centred design, delivery, and evaluation, empowering them to lead training initiative within their communities and organizations.
We deliver globally, offering facilitation in English, French and Arabic, with previous editions delivered in Sudan and Haiti.
We offer customized solutions to strengthen the integration of Conflict Sensitivity across strategic planning and programming. For example, we supported the Resident Coordinator’s Offices in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan through a blended package of online learning and webinars combined with and in-person workshop.
We provide practical, context-specific training that equips UN agencies and partners to apply Conflict Sensitivity and Peacebuilding approaches throughout the programme cycle. Previous editions have strengthened local capacities in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mauritania to ensure programming contributes to peace and avoids exacerbating tensions.
Our most recent edition in Chad featured a blended learning programme consisting of four webinars, a comprehensive online course, and a five-day in-person workshop in N’Djamena, with the overall objective of enhancing the capacities of PBF implementing partners to apply conflict-sensitive and inclusive programming practices tailored to the Chadian context.
Our tailored courses train participants in the application of the fragility lens, conflict analysis and conflict sensitivity. For example, we delivered a tutored course – combining online self-paced components and webinars – to Fragility experts of the African Development Bank (AfDB). Building upon existing AfDB Conflict Sensitivity and Fragility strategies, the goal of the training was to establish an organizational approach which can be adapted to the respective settings participants work in.
