Discover how Roots to Results supports leadership development from emerging professionals to senior executives, building the capabilities needed to lead with purpose, adaptability and impact across the United Nations system.

Today's United Nations (UN) leaders are expected to navigate increasing complexity, lead diverse teams through change, foster collaboration across functions, and deliver results in rapidly evolving operational environments. Developing these capabilities requires more than stand-alone learning initiatives. It requires a coherent approach to leadership development across career stages.

The Roots to Results Leadership and Management Pathway, developed by the Staff College, provides an integrated leadership development architecture grounded in more than two decades of evidence, operational insight and experience supporting leaders across the UN System.

Designed within the UN context, the pathway reflects the realities of leadership across humanitarian, development, peace and normative mandates. It offers a progressive, scalable framework that strengthens leadership capability while supporting a common standard across UN entities.

Explore the four leadership and management tracks

Track I: IGNITE - Foundations of Leadership and Management

Target Audience: Emerging and mid-level leaders - YPP; UNV; JPO; General Service (G6+); National Officers (NOA–NOB); Field Service (FS3–FS5); and Professional Staff (P1–P3)

Equips emerging leaders with the foundations of self-leadership - including emotional intelligence, communication, ethical awareness, and the ability to influence without formal authority. Participants build confidence, collaborate effectively, and step into leadership roles with purpose and presence.

Track II: ELEVATE - From Managing Work to Leading Teams

Target Audience: Mid-senior level managers - Professional Staff (P4/P5); Field Service (FS6/FS7); and National Officers C–D (NOC–NOD) with equivalent people management responsibilities

Targets experienced managers leading teams, projects, or programmes. It focuses on people management, decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and cross-silo collaboration. Participants learn to cultivate psychological safety, manage complexity, and sustain high performance.

Track III: INSPIRE – Leading for System Impact

Target Audience: Senior leaders - D1/D2 colleagues acting as Heads of Office or in roles equivalent to Director level

Supports senior leaders in navigating organisational complexity and shaping institutional transformation. Emphasis is placed on driving reform, managing diverse stakeholders and external partnerships, and leading systemically and across boundaries. Participants align teams and mandates with the broader UN vision, and lead with clarity, humility, and strategic intent.

Focus Track: AMPLIFY – Women and Leadership

Target Audience: Mid-senior level women leaders - Professional Staff (P4/P5); Field Service (FS6/FS7); and National Officers C–D (NOC–NOD) with equivalent leadership responsibilities

AMPLIFY is where women's leadership in the UN system gains its full reach. Drawing on a decade of UNSSC experience, it develops mid-senior women leaders - strengthening agency, influence, and strategic readiness in complex organisational contexts, and addressing the leadership challenges specific to women across the system. Built on the developmental approach of Elevate and Inspire and grounded in the UN System Leadership Framework, it treats gender, culture, and intersectionality as core dimensions of leadership practice. Participants join a growing alumnae community of more than 1,300 women leaders from over 105 duty stations - a network that endures well beyond the programme itself.
