Fostering capabilities for tomorrow

We are headquartered in Turin, Italy, with an office in Bonn, Germany. As the United Nations’ trusted interagency learning partner, we collaborate with UN entities to design and deliver learning solutions that address their specific needs and support shared goals. Our work prepares UN personnel to serve with purpose and create lasting impact.

Governed by a Board of Governors chaired by the Chef de Cabinet of the UN Secretary-General, UNSSC drives system-wide transformation. We provide innovative learning solutions, advisory services, and change facilitation to promote a unified organizational culture. In collaboration with UN entities, governments, academic institutions, and private and civil society partners, UNSSC advances the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Pact for the Future.

History
1969 - 2000

The idea of creating a learning and training institution for UN personnel was first explored in 1969. But it wasn’t until 1996 that the College began operating as a project entrusted to the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization. By August 2000, it was recommended that a full-fledged United Nations System Staff College be established with its own statutes.

2001-2002

In July 2001, the United Nations General Assembly approved the Statute of a new, independent learning organization within the United Nations.  With support from the Italian Government, the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) opened its doors in Turin on 1  January 2002. It shares its campus with the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UN’s Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI).

2016

With support from the Federal Government of Germany, in January, 2016 the UNSSC opened its “Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development”  in Bonn. The Centre was created to equip the UN and its partners with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Today, the UNSSC Bonn Office delivers not only sustainable development learning but also change management and organizational development, as well as academic partnerships.

2020

In 2020, UNSSC embarked on an ambitious journey to reimagine how UN personnel access knowledge, build skills and prepare for evolving global challenges, giving rise to The Blue Line, a unique learning hub open to all UN staff for personalized, self-directed learning. Today, the Blue Line has grown into a global, value-driven learning community connecting over 60,000 UN colleagues and offering personalized live events and collaborative spaces that break silos and strengthen impact across the UN system.
