Sanjay Wijesekera

Sanjay Wijesekera became Director of Programme Group at UNICEF Headquarters in New York in January 2020.

Before taking up this role, Mr. Wijesekera was UNICEF Representative in South Africa and prior to that he was Chief of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Section and Associate Director of Programmes in New York.

Before joining UNICEF, Mr. Wijesekera worked in various capacities in development and humanitarian contexts on managing and supporting policies and programmes focused on improving the realization of the human right to water and sanitation for all including the most marginalised.

Mr. Wijesekera is a national of Sri Lanka. He is a Chartered civil engineer and holds a Master’s degree in Water and Environmental Management from the University of Loughborough, UK.
