What is the Human Rights Economy, how can it reshape the future of global policymaking? What role should the United Nations(UN) play in its advancement?

On 10 October, UNSSC convened a discussion on the transformative potential of the Human Rights Economy (HRE), an approach formally launched by the High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2023, to reshape the future of global economic policymaking. As global inequalities deepen and the climate crisis escalates,  HRE provides a crucial framework for embedding human rights norms into economic decisions, ensuring that economic, social, and cultural rights are treated as legal obligations, not just aspirations.

Key topics covered include:

  • How the current global economic system is failing to address inequalities and climate crises.
  • How a HRE approach could reshape global economic policy to create a just world for all
  • The role of the UN and other international actors in advancing this transformative agenda.
  • Practical challenges and capacity-building needs for implementing the HRE approach.
