The self-paced e-module "Effective Data Sharing for Sustainable Development (EDS)" designed in collaboration with UN Environment and GIZ, equips participants with the practical knowledge and tools needed to enable environmental data sharing for impactful sustainable development action. It supports participants in moving from understanding why data sharing matters to how to structure, implement, and sustain effective systems tailored to local and regional contexts.
The Effective Data Sharing for Sustainable Development (EDS) module provides a practical and structured approach to strengthening environmental data sharing practices to achieve better sustainable development outcomes.
It introduces participants to key concepts, tools, and frameworks that support the development of effective and sustainable data-sharing systems. Drawing on global best practices and real-world case examples, the module highlights how improved data sharing can enhance environmental decision-making and foster regional collaboration across East Africa.

This module is divided into four lessons that can be completed in approximately three hours. It combines interactive content, real-world case studies, and practical guidance to ensure participants can apply learning directly to their own contexts.
The four lessons of the module will focus on:
Lesson 1: Unlocking the Power of Data Sharing for Environmental Action – Introduces the value of environmental data sharing and its role in improving decision-making and sustainable development outcomes.
Lesson 2: Introduction to Pillars of Data Sharing – Provides an overview of the key pillars that enable effective environmental data sharing systems: Governance, Data Availability, Standards, Quality, and Interoperability, Human & Institutional Capacity, and Technological Capacity.
Lesson 3: Best Practices to Enable Cross-Border Data Sharing – Presents real-world case studies that showcase data sharing in reality.
Lesson 4: Recap and Reflection – Consolidates key learnings and encourages reflection on how to apply them in diverse regional and organizational contexts.
This module is designed for professionals from national agencies, regional organizations, and other stakeholders who are involved in environmental data management, policy, or decision-making processes.
