Julián Arévalo
Julián Arévalo is a Senior Researcher and Senior Programme Officer in swisspeace’s Mediation programme and teaches Political Science at the University of Basel’s Department of Social Sciences. Since 2022, he has been working on the Mediation Support Project, supported by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. In this capacity, he has supported peace initiatives and dialogues in countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America. He has also taught and facilitated several swisspeace training courses.
Julián’s research focuses on studying the complex dynamics of peace negotiations and the role of negotiation process design in providing peacebuilding actors with tools to navigate such complexity.
Prior to joining swisspeace, Julián worked for four years as an Associate at the Institute for Integrated Transitions in Spain and as Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the Universidad Externado de Colombia.
Julián is a graduate of Economics from the Universidad Externado de Colombia and holds a PhD in Political Science from Boston University. He co-authored the books “Negotiation and Cooperation: Theory and experiences in conflict resolution” and “A Course in Classical Game Theory. ” He has also published academic articles on negotiation theory, complexity, peacemaking and institutionalization.
