Introduction

Why climate and environment?

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution – collectively known as the triple planetary crisis – pose a profound threat to people and planet. This crisis is not only environmental; it is also a development and security crisis, undermining livelihoods, deepening inequalities and jeopardizing progress across all dimensions of sustainable development and international peace. Realizing the vision outlined in the 2030 Agenda, the New Agenda for Peace and the Paris Agreement depends on our ability to adequately address the interlinkages between climate, development, peace and security.

Capacity building for global change

At UNSSC, we strengthen the capacity of United Nations (UN) personnel and stakeholders to translate global climate and environmental commitments into effective action, building more resilient and peaceful societies.

Developed with academic rigour and in collaboration with UN entities and international organizations, our learning offerings equip participants with the knowledge and tools to tackle the interlinked challenges of climate, biodiversity and pollution in a holistic way. From strengthening climate‑resilient development and fulfilling environmental reporting obligations to showcasing innovative solutions that build resilience, we empower UN personnel, governments and civil society to drive lasting impact.

Climate Transparency and the Enhanced Transparency Framework

The Climate Transparency & the Enhanced Transparency Framework course is a blended programme designed to strengthen the capacity of developing countries to implement the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement in ways that support both global and national climate policy goals, while also contributing to the achievement of national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.

This course is the result of a collaboration between UNSSC, the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency – Global Support Programme (CBIT-GSP) developed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and implemented by the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre.

UNOPS Learning Journey for the Triple Planetary Crisis

The UNOPS Learning Journey to Address the Triple Planetary Crisis (TPC) is a blended programme aimed at developing UNOPS personnel's capacity to act on TPC and advocate for action with partners and stakeholders. The programme combines three components: e-learning modules on TPC fundamentals and its connection to infrastructure, supply chain and procurement; interactive webinars for knowledge exchange; and an in-person TPC Lab to build practical skills for integrating TPC action into their work.

FAO Climate Action Academy

Our tailored solutions are specially designed to meet the needs of our partner organizations. For instance, the FAO Climate Action Academy was developed to meet the needs of FAO personnel, whose work includes various aspects of climate action. The Academy included two in-person workshops that were offered separately to Climate Change Network Focal Points and Loss and Damage Focal Points, encompassing different substantive and leadership sessions aimed at fostering internal collaboration and advancing the work of FAO on climate change.

The most impactful part of attending GCAP was witnessing firsthand the practical steps being taken in land restoration, especially during the field visit to Germany’s open-cast mines. It offered valuable insights into augmenting our wildlife and biodiversity laws—lessons I am taking back home to strengthen our national efforts.

Former Member of Parliament, United Kingdom

One of the aspects that gave me the most cause for reflection during G-CAP was the interlinkage between gender and land use. While I’ve engaged with various dimensions of gender equality before, I had never truly considered how deeply it connects to land use. It was illuminating to gain that insight.

Saint Lucia is about to prepare its first Biennial Transparency Report, making the topics covered in the programme highly insightful, appropriate and applicable. The workshop sessions provided valuable insights on how to effectively communicate and persuade our data suppliers on the urgency of the data we need, as well as establish data-sharing agreements.
