This course familiarizes participants with various types of private sector entities and illustrates how strategic engagement with them can support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Participants are introduced to tools for identifying shared objectives that foster mutual value creation and emphasize the importance of mitigating risk.

Additionally, the course underscores the importance of advocating for sustainable development to be placed at the heart of business strategies and investment decisions.

Introduction

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development stands out for its unparalleled scope and ambition. Neither the UN nor individual governments possess the reach or resources to achieve it independently. Active engagement—particularly with the private sector—is essential to its success.

Given its unparalleled reach, the private sector is uniquely positioned to drive progress toward the goals of the 2030 Agenda—and in many cases, is already doing so. The UN and its Member States must capitalize on this potential by forging strategic partnerships with private sector entities and advocating for businesses to integrate sustainable development into their core operations.

Furthermore, the 2030 Agenda presents the private sector with significant opportunities, including access to new markets and institutional investments projected to reach $12 trillion by 2030, along with the creation of 380 million new jobs. These prospects offer a powerful incentive for collaboration between the private sector and governments to turn the 2030 Agenda into reality.
