The Secretary-General’s Data Strategy recognizes the need for the UN system to make better use of UN data—grounded in UN values and human rights—as an integral part of the organization’s future and work. UN 2.0 also emphasizes the need for global data action and identifies “Data” and “Digital capacity” as two of the key skills that UN staff and personnel need to acquire. Using data in our daily work and leveraging the data potential we have at the UN will significantly improve the efficiency of our missions and programmes. Based on accurate situational analysis, we can respond to identified needs and problems with tailored solutions, optimize resource allocation and make evidence-based decisions.
As data literacy is one of the core skills of today's and tomorrow's world, it is crucial that it is no longer a skill of specialized experts but learned and applied by every UN staff member. Recognizing the need for enhanced skills in this field, UNSSC has developed a broad portfolio in data analytics aimed at training and strengthening the ability to use data in our daily work.
In order to meet different learning needs and ensure efficient training for all, we offer data analytics programmes that are designed to support all UN personnel, with diverse technical background from different organizations, as well as courses specifically for practitioners working in peacebuilding and peacekeeping operations. Both learning paths include a standard repertoire of courses at beginner and advanced level as well as tailored solutions customized for your team or organization. We use the specific terminology “Integrated Data Analytics” for our peace and security courses to refer to the practice of combining multiple data sources and different perspectives for a more accurate picture of the situation.
Below you can find our upcoming open enrolment courses in data analytics. Secure your spot by selecting the right course for you.
In addition to our standard open enrolment courses, we also offer various customized solutions that are tailored to the exact needs of the organisation and the participants’ learning needs.
This course was designed for mid-level to senior level staff from the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy for Yemen (OSESGY). In a group of 27 staff members, participants deepened their knowledge and appreciation of the use of data in strategic planning and political analysis, including basic to intermediate knowledge of a few data management systems. The training was facilitated in a blended format (2 online webinars, 1 in person training over 4 days in Jordan) and in collaboration with How to Build Up.

This 4-week webinar series, containing 8 live webinars and delivered in collaboration with How to Build Up, was a customized online course for 25 staff members of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). It provided political affairs officers with relevant data competencies for their daily functions, such as the ability to interpret, analyse and visualize data from various sources for data-informed decision-making. By leveraging advanced analytical techniques, DPPA staff gained deeper insights into complex conflict dynamics, allowing for more targeted and impactful interventions.

This online course was a tailored learning solution for 27 colleagues from the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The aim was to enable them to identify and analyse data relevant to the delivery of protection of civilians mandates in UN peacekeeping at the operational and strategic levels, including modules about data exploration, visualization, and storytelling. In collaboration with How to Build Up, we delivered the course in 9 live webinars over 6 weeks.

We have successfully delivered this customized, instructor-led training to diverse UN agencies as WFP and ILO, helping their programmes turn complex data into clear, compelling insights. In today’s fast-paced, data-driven environment, the ability to transform raw data into impactful visual narratives is essential for analysts, researchers, and managers in the UN system. The difference between making evidence-based decisions—or not—often hinges on how effectively data is communicated.
The course offers a triple benefit:
i) an introduction to the data analytics lifecycle,
ii) strengthened data visualization and storytelling skills, and
iii) practical application to reporting and communication.
Each training is co-designed with the organization’s focal point and tailored to their specific datasets, tools, and case studies to reflect real business needs. It covers data collection, preparation, analysis, visualization and storytelling. Participants engage through hands-on exercises, live sessions and forum for peer exchange—ensuring relevance, collaboration, and on-the-job impact.
