This self-paced online course equips learners with strategies for building governance structures, managing financial flows, and implementing sustainable policies — all within Africa’s unique context.  

Introduction

Developed by the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa and the United Nations System Staff College, with financial support from the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund, this course aims to provide policymakers with the tools to implement solutions made for Africa in Africa that boost the continent’s development.

Participants will be equipped with insights and knowledge to assess and promote sustainable development and durable peace in the region. Through a comprehensive conceptual framework, it explores the interconnectedness of peace, sustainable development, financing, and governance. 

Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Analyze the dependencies between peace and sustainable development. 
  2. Evaluate the role of sustainable financing in achieving development goals. 
  3. Understand the importance of managing economic and financial flows. 
  4. Assess the necessity of strong institutions and effective governance. 
  5. Apply these concepts in practical scenarios, such as school meal programmes. 
Course methodology

The course is entirely online consisting of a series of self-paced video lectures and text-based components to enhance participants' learning experience. Within this course, participants will have access to chat forums, reading materials, practice exercises, and much more. It will take approximately five weeks to complete.

  • Module 2: Sustainable Development Requires (Nationally Owned) Sustainable Financing – The Triple Nexus Framework  
  • Module 3: Sustainable Financing Requires Control Over Economic and Financial Flows 
  • Module 4: Control Over Economic and Financial Flows Requires Strong and Effective Institutions and Governance 
  • Module 5: Implementing Effective Policies with a Case Study on School Meals 
Target audience

The target audience for this course are mid-level government officials across key ministries in Africa, including finance and planning, education, energy, agriculture and homeland security. The course will also benefit a diverse range of professionals, including staff members of international organizations, civil service, regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and academia across Africa. 

Selection criteria 

Selection criteria includes quality of motivation, relevant experience and knowledge, commitment, diversity (gender, geographic region, sector, etc.), and willingness to contribute to society upon completion of the course. 

Cost of participation

Thanks to the generous support of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund, the “Peace and Development Nexus in Africa: Governance, Financing, and Country Systems” is offered free of charge.
