This module explores conflict-sensitive programming in Darfur, as well as the complexity of conflict dynamics and challenges in the region that aid practioners need to be familiar with to meaningfully engage in the Darfur states.

Introduction

This module has been developed in partnership with UNDP Sudan and thanks to the generous support of PBF.

This module examines various aspects of Darfur that are essential for understanding and effectively applying practical tools in conflict-sensitive programming within the region.

Objectives

In this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the key components of Darfur's social fabric, history and governance
  2. Recognize the main factors shaping conflict in Darfur
  3. Explore the challenges of implementing aid interventions in Darfur
  4. Assess ways to consciously engage with violence-affected communities in Darfur
Course methodology

This module is entirely self-paced and it will take an average of 2.5 hours to complete.

The final sessions include a scenario-based exercise and a knowledge check to put in practice what you've learned.

Course contents

This online course is divided into five main sessions 

  • Session 1: Setting the scene - First, we'll look at Darfur's social fabric, geography, history, and administration 
  • Session 2: Factors Shaping Conflict in Darfur - Next, we'll analyze key topics such as marginalization, land, competition over resources and migration 
  • Session 3: Navigating Conflicts in Darfur - We'll explore traditional and modern conflicts in Darfur, the role of the Sudanese state and different conflict resolution mechanisms 
  • Session 4: Displacement and Aid interventions in Darfur - We'll explore the key aspects of displacement in Darfur and its historic waves of aid interventions 
  • Session 5: General Principles for Programming in Darfur - We'll explore the main challenges for aid workers in Darfur and general principles for engaging with violence-affected communities in Darfur

Un and Non-UN aid practioners working in/on Sudan, particularly in/on the region of Darfur.
