Zohra Opoku

Zohra Opoku (Altdöbern, Germany, 1976) is a sculptor, photographer, and textile visual artist, who identifies herself as “German, Afro-German, African, Ghanaian, Obroni (‘foreigner’ in the Twi language) and Asante”. Inspired by West African traditions, cycles of life, and the natural world, in her works she deals with fragility, care, and recovery from traumas.

Opoku has exhibited internationally on Inherited Threads, Tate Modern, London (2022); Empowerment, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2022); In Their Own Form, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago (2018); Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (2016); Rhododendron, Southbank Centre Hayward Gallery, London (2015), amongst others. Her work is collected by renowned institutions such as Cleveland Clinic Collection, Faurschou Foundation, Royal Museum of Ontario, Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Hessel Museum of Art (CCS Bard College), Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Tate Modern.
