Organised by the UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development in partnership with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the SD Talks Special Series on Climate Action is a 7-episode webinar series that aims to advance knowledge and further dialogue around Climate Action, in the lead up to and during COP 23 which will take place in November in Bonn, Germany. The first webinar of this series titled Paris Agreement and the SDGs: One Agenda for a Sustainable Future will take place on 3 May 2017 from 3:15 pm to 4:30 pm CEST (9:15 am to 10:30 am EDT). It will feature UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed who will talk about the interlinkages between the Paris Agreement and the sustainable development agenda, and will examine how their mutually reinforcing relationship affects their implementation.

The speaker panel will also include Mr. Nick Nuttall, Spokesperson to the UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa. The discussion will be moderated by Simona Costanzo-Sow of the UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development. After the discussion, participants will have the opportunity to ask their questions directly to the speakers during the live Q&A session.

Webinar#2 | National Climate Plans (NDCs): Blueprints for a Global Transformation

The Paris Climate Change Agreement sets the goals, and now countries must translate them into action. The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) set out what each country plans to do as part of the Paris Agreement to contribute to the international effort to secure a sustainable future for all. This webinar will explain how NDCs open up a new universe of economic and cooperation opportunities to realise the mitigation and adaptation plans and increase climate resilience. The webinar will feature Claudio Forner, team-lead on mitigation at UNFCCC and Koko Warner, manager of the UNFCCC impacts, vulnerability and risks sub-programme.

Webinar #3 | Climate and Sustainable Development Finance: Can We Bank on It?

Boosting climate and sustainable development finance for a low-emission, resilient future—while creating the necessary investment culture—will be key to meeting the long-term goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the 2030 Agenda. More action is needed as transformational change, already underway, takes hold in capital and financial markets across the globe. Public and private finance must be channelled towards sustainable development business models in emerging and developed economies. In doing so, business value will become the new norm in securing a clean and sustainable future for all. This webinar will discuss what is being done to get to the future we all want. It will explain current climate and development finance and investment policy and action, and will outline some opportunities and challenges. The webinar will feature Grant Kirkman, Head of Relations Management of Climate for Finance at UNFCCC and Liza Leclerc, who leads the secretariat support to the Standing Committee on Finance, the Financial Mechanism and the Adaptation Fund at UNFCCC.

Webinar#4 | COP23 in Bonn: Setting the Rules of the Climate Game; Making Cooperation Stick

Between 6-17 November, thousands of government delegates and leaders from all sectors of society will gather in Bonn (Germany) for the 2017 UN Climate Change Conference. Under the Presidency of Fiji, the UNFCCC secretariat with the support of Germany will host this annual meeting with one clear objective: making progress for a successful, inclusive and ambitious implementation of the Paris Agreement. This includes negotiations on the rule book—or operating manual—for transparent climate action under the Paris Agreement, as well as showcasing cooperative climate action, including on vulnerability and resilience, from around the globe. This webinar will explain the milestones and key challenges that lie ahead of COP 23.
