From 23 to 28 October this year, over 500 delegates from more than 120 countries will gather in Manila, Philippines, for the 12th Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), CMS COP12. The theme of the wildlife summit is ‘Their future is our future – sustainable development for wildlife and people’, highlighting the interlinkages between the protection of migratory species, and the economic and social wellbeing of people and the planet.

In the lead-up to CMS COP12, the United Nations System Staff College Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development and the CMS have launched a new explainer video on what the CMS does and why it is important for the future of humanity to protect migratory wild animals. The video emphasizes that migratory animals provide vital services which satisfy people’s everyday needs – as a source of food and medicine, as pollinators and seed dispersers, and as a means of pest control. Protecting migratory species is therefore another way of contributing to the sustainable development goals.
