SSAFE course for Surge Deployment - July
This 3-day programme responds to the demand from the UN system and its partners to train staff who need to be deployed over a short notice to volatile and dangerous areas of the world and need a comprehensive safety and security training.
Introduction
The training curriculum is based on the UNDSS-UNSSC SSAFE standard modules and combines theoretical lessons, demonstrations, group-work, practical exercises and field simulations. It is delivered by SSAFE Trainers certified by UNDSS and UNSSC, who regularly run SSAFE courses at their duty stations. It responds to the demand from the UNDSS and UN system to train staff (mainly form the HQ) who need to be deployed over a short notice to volatile and dangerous areas of the world and need a comprehensive safety and security training.
Objectives
To enhance participants’ security awareness by providing them with the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to various security incidents that they might encounter.
Course Methodology
This course combines theoretical lessons, demonstrations, group work, practical exercises and simulations. It is delivered by SSAFE certified trainers who regularly run SSAFE courses in their duty stations.
A unique feature is the field-day exercise, conducted with professional role players from the Italian Army which simulates situations that staff may encounter while fulfilling their duties and missions.
Course Contents
The standard SSAFE learning curriculum that will be taught during the course consists of the following modules:
- UN Security Management System ;
- History, Background and Culture;
- Personal Security;
- Radio Communications ;
- Weapon Awareness ;
- Travel, Convoy and Vehicle Security
- Hostage Survival ;
- Incident Management (Basic Life Saving);
- Field-based Exercise/Simulations.
The field-day exercise is conducted with professional role players from the Italian Army and simulates real situations that staff may encounter while fulfilling their duties and missions.This simulation enhances the learning experience of participants by providing them with an opportunity to be faced with potential risks and dangers that are likely to occur when working in volatile and unstable areas of the world.
Target Audience
The course is open to staff of the UN system and affiliated organizations in the field and at headquarters.
Cost of participation
The course fee of 1,500 USD covers the 3-day course (including participation in the field day), training and facilitation services as well as the course materials. Participants are responsible for their own travel, transfers, accommodation and meals.
