Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE) Course for Surge Deployment - February
A three-day course for UN staff who are being deployed to volatile and dangerous areas of the world and need a comprehensive safety and security training
Introduction
This three-day programme responds to the demands for training UN staff and partners who need to be deployed with short notice to volatile and dangerous areas of the world and who require SSAFE certification in order to do so.
The maximum number of participants per each course is 26.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will:
- Be equipped with skills and knowledge to identify threats to personal safety and security and mitigate the risks.
Course Methodology
This course combines theoretical lessons, demonstrations, group work, practical exercises and simulations. It is delivered by SSAFE-certified Trainers who regularly run SSAFE courses in their duty stations. A unique feature is the field-day exercise, conducted with professional role players from the Italian Army, which simulates real situations that staff may encounter while fulfilling their duties and missions.
Course Contents
The curriculum is based on the Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE) standard modules, jointly developed by the UN System Staff College and the United Nations Department for Safety and Security (UNDSS): UN Security Management System; History, Background and Culture; Personal Security; Radio Communications; Weapon Awareness; Travel, Convoy and Vehicle Security; Hostage Survival; Incident Management (Basic Life-saving); and Field-based Exercise/Simulations

UN professional staff.
Cost of participation
The course fee of 2,000 USD covers the 3-day residential course (including participation in the field day) and lodging and meals during the course period. Participants are responsible for their own travel and transfers.
