The twin resolutions on sustaining peace, along with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, represent system-wide frameworks that place prevention as a key priority and shared responsibility. The concept of sustaining peace, in particular, focuses on a continuum of preventive actions that cuts across all pillars and work streams of the UN system as a whole – from humanitarian action and peacekeeping to peacebuilding and sustainable development.
The Secretary-General’s Data Strategy recognizes the need for the whole system to make better use of UN data – with approaches grounded in UN values and human rights – as an integral part of the organization’s future and work. The peace and security pillar is highlighted in the strategy as one of the high priorities of use cases and portfolios for the 2021 roll-out of the strategy.
In line with the Secretary-General's Data Strategy and prevention priorities, the UN System Staff College is offering a curriculum for staff working in the peace and security pillar and peacebuilding to be able to understand and visualize data for better integrated storytelling and decision making.
The course will focus on enhancing the ability of UN Staff Members working in the field of peace and security to:
- Understand Integrated data analytics: Using data to better understand “what happened,” “what might happen next” and “how to respond.”
- Understand UN data analytics integration initiatives and tools used in the UN system as they relate to the sustaining peace pillar (what data do they capture? what are they used for?);
- Exploring data and spreadsheets
- Data visualization [Basic skills -e.g. Excel, Power Bi, Kumu];
- Storytelling with data
- Data management [general introduction to the issue and discussion on ethics]
The course will be facilitated in line with adult-learning best practices. It will include plenary discussions, scenario building exercises in break out group sessions, with emphasis placed on frank and interactive exchanges in a safe and inclusive environment to foster creativity, innovation and problem solving.
MODULES The course will include five modules, eight webinars (or live) sessions, and a self-paced module and group work exercises.
MODULE 1. Data analytics for sustaining peace in the UN System
This module will provide an overview of current tools and technologies available for peacebuilding and integrated data analytics within the United Nations and among other partners. The module will also introduce some of the challenges and opportunities with those technologies.
MODULE 2. Introduction to data and spreadsheets
This module will give participants an introduction to data and spreadsheets. At the end of the session, participants will have an understanding of what data is and how it is structured, as well as how to begin to use data in spreadsheets.
MODULE 3. Exploring data
This module will give participants an introduction to data exploration in spreadsheets (Excel) by using examples from sustaining peace agenda practitioners. The goal of the session is to introduce participants to the activities of exploring data, focusing on practical techniques for gaining an understanding of data using Excel PivotTables and PivotCharts.
MODULE 4. Data visualization and storytelling
The goal of the session is to introduce participants to the principles of data visualization and the steps for creating basic visualization. The slidedeck in this module gives participants an overview of the principles of good visualizations, types of visualizations and their suitability for presenting different types of data. The module will also provide an overview on how to use data visualization to build compelling stories for sustaining peace practitioners.
MODULE 5. Technology and ethical challenges with data management
This module will build on some of the issues identified during the first module and cover other pre-identified challenges/issues with regards to data management (data privacy, ethics, protection of data subjects etc.).
