On-line Communities

The role of on-line communities in the UNSSC’s portfolio

Communities of practice (often abbreviated as CoPs) are a tool of recognized value in knowledge management strategies. The term refers to the process of social learning that occurs and shared practices that emerge and evolve when people who have common goals interact as they strive towards those goals.

The continued growth of the Internet and supporting technologies, as well as the geographically-disperse nature of the UN System, have favoured the development of virtual collaboration spaces (on-line communities) as a means to foster the development and growth of communities of practice within the system.

On-line communities are thus a key instrument in the UNSSC’s strategy to fulfil its role as catalyst for system-wide collaboration, knowledge management and learning.

Accessing UNSSC on-line communities

The UNSSC manages, leads, supports and/or participates in multiple communities of practice accessible on-line. Eligibility criteria for membership in these communities varies from one community to another. Links to UNSSC communities are listed on this page for your convenience.
