Workshops and Learning events

Undaf Strategic Planning Retreats

UNDAF Strategic Planning Retreats are interventions during which the UN Country Team, senior UN staff, government counterparts and civil society organizations work together to define the key development priorities that the UN can support in the next programming cycle, typically for five years.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE
The overall objective of these learning events is to help the UN Country Team and development partners select common strategic priorities and results for UN System support to the country’s pursuit of national development priorities.

UNDAF Design Workshops

UNDAF Design workshops are organized to support the UN Country Teams (UNCTs) and partners to initiate the UNDAF planning process by facilitating dialogue on key national development problems and the UN’s comparative advantages.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE
The objective of these workshops is to assist UN Country Teams to carry out high quality analyses of country development problems, plan for development of strategic UN Development Assistance Frameworks, and contributing agency programmes and projects.

During the workshops, the UN Country Teams discuss, with their development partners and UN colleagues from headquarters and regional offices, recent aspects of UN reform, how these can have an impact on conducting analyses of the development situation in a UN-assisted country, human rights-based approaches to programming, action planning for their programming process and best practices in the UN system.

Training of Trainers Workshops

OVERALL OBJECTIVE
The main objective of Training of Trainers workshops is to train participants to co-facilitate UNDAF Design Workshops and UNDAF Strategic Planning Retreats with UN Country Teams (and their staff) and Partners (Government, civil society, donors) using participatory learning methodologies.

Participants to these intensive workshops are chosen from UN senior programme staff with experience and expertise in the UN programming process and with a basic understanding of a Human Rights based approach to development. They are updated on the more recent aspects of UN reform, on the importance of a Human Rights-based approach to programming, and on facilitation skills.

Participants in the Training of Trainer workshops are senior staff members with experience of the UN Country programming process and they are expected to be available to assist UN Country Teams in discussing preparation of analysis and planning documents for the next Country Programme Cycle.

UNCT Coordination & Leadership Skills Workshops

These global learning events are helping to create a common learning, management and leadership culture among senior managers within the UN system at the country and regional levels.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES
The overall objective of these learning events is to equip new UN Resident Coordinators & UNCT members with the skills needed in their jobs as coordinators and leaders of the UN at the country level. Participants are expected to be more effective leaders of the RC System at the Country level.

This project provides new UN RCs & UNCT members with an up-to-date information on UN Reform as well as practical skills training in the key areas of competencies. Participants also discuss the effective management of the UN system in political, humanitarian, security and human rights areas.

UN Coordination Officer Workshops

As part of continued efforts to strengthen the Resident Coordination System, UNSSC, in collaboration with UNDOCO, organises induction workshops for new Coordination Officers. Coordination Officer Workshops are designed to assist participants – who are all working in Resident Coordinator Offices in the field - to carry out their duties more effectively, thereby contributing towards strengthened and improved support to UN Country Teams.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE
To help new Coordination Officers to play a dynamic role in supporting Resident Coordinators and the UN Country Team (UNCT) in achieving the vision of a UN at country level.

These workshops are attended by UN Coordination Officers, UN staff whose duty is to support the Country Team and the Resident Coordinator with coordination of the UN’s activities in a country. Coordination Officers play an important role in organising and monitoring the inter-agency work of the UN, in their roles as staff of Resident Coordinator’s Offices.

The workshops cover updates of UN Reform and programming and planning in a UN context. The topics of the workshops are chosen by the Coordination Officers themselves and experience-sharing by participants is also an important part of these workshops. These events are held at the regional and global level.
