The United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) successfully launched its new course ‘Applying the Human Security Approach for Agenda 2030’, in partnership with the Human Security Unit based in New York.  The programme aimed at equipping participants with skills and knowledge to address multi-dimensional insecurities and advance planning towards achieving the 2030 Agenda.

The 4-day training programme brought together senior and mid-level staff from different UN and governmental entities working in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The broad range of experiences and expertise as well as the wealth of different perspectives made the course highly dynamic and interactive. Practical exercises, group discussions and joint reflections represented the very core of the training.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasizes the interconnectivity and complexity of the challenges that face humanity and calls for a holistic approach that require the combined inputs of the United Nations system, in partnership with Governments, non-governmental entities, and the communities themselves to ensure a more inclusive and shared prosperity.

To this end, the Human Security Approach offers an important framework that can assist the United Nations system and its partners to assess, develop and implement integrated responses that result in more resilient societies where people are safe from chronic threats such as abject poverty, hunger, disease, violence and repression, while protected from sudden and hurtful disruptions in their daily lives.

The course ‘Applying the Human Security Approach for Agenda 2030’ is designed specifically to equip practitioners and policy-makers with the theoretical and practical skills needed to adopt a comprehensive, people-centred and prevention-oriented approach to support national planning towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

Participants confirmed that the training allowed them to "think differently” by looking at the 2030 Agenda from a different and more nuanced perspective, as well as to “act differently” by identifying practical ways to apply the Human Security Approach in their work.

The next edition of the course will be held in January. For more information send an email to peacesecurity@unssc.org.
